UPDATE 25.01.2024: EVENT CANCELLED

The race committee met this evening to assess current and predicted river levels for the weekend. Unfortunately, the immensely difficult decision has been reached to cancel our winter head. We are absolutely devastated, however from a safety aspect it is completely unjustifiable to run the event. It is news we did not want to be delivering, however the river is simply not falling fast enough. It is yet to peak (forecast to peak tomorrow evening), and the predicted levels thereafter are showing a steady decrease to 2.68m by Saturday morning. The prediction doesn’t show past this time currently, however, our event would need to see levels close to 1.3m to safely run. Hopefully this puts into perspective the drop we would need to see which at this stage is just unrealistic, despite our original hopes. The club has taken a double hit this winter, seeing both of our events cancelled, which is never a decision we reach lightly. 

 

We would like to thank everyone for their entries to this event and our small boats head back in November. The support is greatly appreciated, and we hope that for the next winter season Mother Nature will be kinder to us and allow us to run our events once again. 

If anyone has any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact me, as always. I will process full refunds to all crews who have paid over the next couple of days.

Liz Danby and Deb Taylor fought a tremendous race in the W2xE final (and also in their quad along with Jane Ryman and Sarah Peace). Furthermore Pete Spencer and Tim Haywood in the MasE2- and Duncan Gwilliam in his 1x missed out on the medals table by only a few seconds. ]]> Who knew Stourport Boat Club has water wombles! (To those unfamiliar, a children’s programme in the 70’s with the same name featured wombles who cleaned up their local outdoor environment.) It is not the first time that Grant Simpson has done this. It was a huge haul of plastic that has been removed from the trees of the River Severn. A wonderful effort by just some of the volunteers that work hard in the background to enable us to enjoy our rowing. Thank you so much gentlemen for removing the eyesore and making the river safer for the wildlife, especially the swans who are now hatching eggs.

]]> Congratulations to Jane Ryman who has been awarded her level 3 coaching certificate!

Level 3 is the highest level in Senior Club rowing and is a 3 year course including written and practical examinations covering all aspects of club rowing. It’s been a particularly difficult course to complete due to the Covid restrictions and the practical requirements but, Jane took her final practical assessment and interview on Sunday 3rd April at the club which she passed with flying colours.

Well done Jane!

]]> Roger Bean, pictured above, rows at Stourport on Severn and Bewdley and most enjoys the companionship, friendly rivalry and banter of masters rowing. His lovingly restored single clinker scull ‘J Hopper’ is on display at Henley’s River and Rowing Museum

What’s your secret to staying strong and supple enough to row?

Roger: My wife’s excellent cooking, Batham’s Best Bitter, solo and crew rowing two or three times a week (scull and sweep), singing in a local male voice choir (lung power!) and gardening and motorcycling. Oh, and the gym – but only when coerced by my crew, whose members include two at 85 and three in their mid-seventies.

How long have you been rowing and what has the sport given to you over the years?

Roger: My grandfather took me to his club, Ebchester, in 1958 when I was aged 11. I’ve been rowing ever since (with some gaps due to business) and returned full-time to Durham and the Northern Rowing Sunday League when I retired in 2010.

The Northern League was terrific fun and brought many friends from all over the country. Although I no longer compete at regatta level, it’s very sociably rewarding helping out at our regattas and other aspects of the club.

]]> Welcome to our new website. It’s been a while since we refreshed it and we’d love to hear your feedback.

Here you will find lots of information about us from the history of our club, and our management team, through to this year’s events and the latest news as they unfold.

Our membership is vibrant since recovering from the pandemic; watch out for dates for our popular Learn to Row courses for children and adults.

We offer a wide range of sponsorship packages and work closely with many local businesses to enable us to offer great facilities at affordable prices for our members. If you are interested in finding out more please let one of the committee members know in person or via email.

Finally we are delighted to announce that we have recently received a grant of £2,000 from The Rowing Foundation to fund the purchase of new equipment for the Junior squad. This will help our young athletes in delivering their best performances over the coming months.
